The AFL has confirmed that American rock band The Killers will be headlining this year's Grand Final, with Australian singer Dami Im to perform the national anthem.
The band confirmed the news in a statement. "People of the great country of Australia — let us inject our American rock and roll tunes into your sporting event, please! AFL, here we come," The Killers said. The Las Vegas artists will perform in the Virgin Australia Pre-Game Show and the Virgin Australia Premiership Party, which takes place after the Grand Final and is open to the public after 6pm. It is expected that The Killers will perform songs from their latest album Wonderful Wonderful, as well as two of their biggest hits, Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me. AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan expressed his excitement about the news. "I'm so pleased that The Killers have agreed to play on that one day in September as fans of all ages enjoy their music," McLachlan said. Dami Im represented Australia in the 2016 Eurovision competition and finished second place. "It's such an honour to be performing the national anthem at the AFL Grand Final, the biggest sporting event of the year," Im said. The Grand Final takes place on September 30, with the first week of finals taking place this week.
