Brisbane Lions defender Harris Andrews has suffered internal bleeding on the brain after heavily colliding with Giants forward Jeremy Cameron, during the first quarter of last Saturday's game at the Gabba.
The Lions vice-captain was in a marking contest when Cameron's elbow hit Andrews' jaw, knocking him unconscious before he had hit the ground. Andrews left the field on a stretcher and watched the remainder of the game from the bench. The Brisbane Lions Football Club released a statement confirming that Andrews had suffered a "severe concussion" and bleeding on his brain. "Andrews was admitted to hospital late Saturday night after his condition worsened. After undergoing tests and scans, he was discharged and returned home Sunday evening," the statement read. Lions general manager of football David Noble stated that Andrews would be consulted by a neurosurgeon and would undergo assessment in two weeks' time. "Our discussion with the neurosurgeon have been encouraging as they expect Harris to make a full recovery," Noble said. "He will have a follow-up scan in two weeks' time, when we will know more." Jeremy Cameron is expected to be sidelined for at least a month with suspension.

Dayne Beams has today stepped down as captain of the Brisbane Lions indefinitely.
Beams, who lost his father to cancer last March, has been struggling to cope with football since the passing. After consulting Lions CEO Greg Swann, coach Chris Fagan and General Manager of Football David Noble, the 28-year-old decided to hand over the captaincy to Dayne Zorko. Beams released a statement to the club website following his decision. "I've reached the decision today, I feel like it's in the best interests for myself and my family that I hand over the captaincy to Dayne Zorko indefinitely," Beams said on www.lions.com.au. "Obviously the last three months for myself, I'm not going to lie, they've been bloody difficult, and I've experienced some really bad lows. "I think footy's been hard for me because I associated football with my father. So it feels like a big chunk of my football life is missing at the moment. So, I just feel like I need some time to find where I belong in the game. And just find my feet again and find my love for the game again. "I still love coming into the footy club." Changes were made to the leadership group alongside Zorko becoming the new Lions captain. Harris Andrews has become the new vice-captain, while the remaining players in the leadership group are Stefan Martin, Ryan Lester and Allen Christensen. Noble spoke about his support for Beams' decision. "Dayne brought this to us recently to discuss his leadership role. He has had a lot on his plate personally the past six months, and with the energy required to support Kelly with the upcoming birth of their second child, we believe it was the right move for him," Noble said. "We are confident that the leadership group that supported Dayne are more than capable to lead this Club and want to congratulate Dayne Zorko and Harris Andrews on their new roles as Captain and Vice-Captain of the Lions. "It is moments like these we are fortunate to have a leader like of Luke Hodge with our Club, and along with our leadership group, he can offer support to Zorko and Harris where appropriate." Beams first became captain of the Lions prior to the 2017 season. He has played eight out of nine games this season and will continue to play. |
