Richmond ruckman Shaun Hampson has announced he will retire immediately, after suffering a chronic back injury for the past two seasons.
He announced his retirement in front of his teammates on Tuesday, despite believing only a week earlier that he could get himself fit enough to play in the VFL. Richmond's general manager of football Neil Balme thanked Hampson for his time at the club, and wished him the best for the future with supermodel partner Megan Gale and their two kids. "Shaun worked bravely and tirelessly to give himself the best chance to overcome this painful injury," Balme said. "There is ultimately a point where Shaun must think of his long-term health, rather than just the immediate challenge of playing football. It was clear to Shaun and our medical staff that he had reached that point. "Shaun certainly loves his family and it was a very difficult decision for him to make. "He is a very popular member of our squad and we thank him for his dedication to our football club. "We wish Shaun, Megan and their children River and Rosie all the best for the future." Hampson was drafted in 2006 as pick no. 17 in the national draft. He played 63 games for Carlton until the end of 2013, where he shifted to Richmond and played 35 games in the yellow and black.
