Melbourne forward Harley Balic has retired immediately from football after losing passion for the game.
The former Docker played only four matches across two seasons while in Perth, after he was drafted at pick No. 38 in the 2015 national draft. Balic expressed his struggle with homesickness and returned to Victorian at the end of last season. After joining the Demons, Balic never had the opportunity to play in the senior side. He played 11 games for VFL affiliate Casey, kicking 16 goals. Balic spoke on melbournefc.com.au and thanked the Melbourne Football Club for giving him another chance at playing AFL. "It was an easy decision in the end, as I've thought about it for a little while now," Balic said. "It's something I'm not going to regret and I'm very appreciative to Melbourne for letting me come to the club for a second chance. "I've always loved football, but my heart's not in it and everything ends up being a grind and I think it's just the right thing to do. "The (Demons') VFL and AFL (teams) are both going to be successful this year and it's something I'd love to be a part of, if I loved it, but unfortunately I don't and it's time to go out into the real world and see what else is out there for me." Melbourne general manager of football operations, Josh Mahoney, supported Balic's decision to retire. "AFL football is a tough and uncompromising industry that requires players to be fully invested and have the drive and passion to thrive," Mahoney said. "We have been in discussions with Harley throughout the year and support his decision to retire and move on with his life."
