Melbourne midfielder Tomas Bugg was reported on Friday night for striking Sydney defender Callum Mills behind play, in the opening four minutes of the match at the MCG.
The Demons were kicking in from the Swans' attacking 50 when Bugg punched Mills in the side of the face. Mills fell to the ground and took at least 10 seconds to get to his feet while Bugg was immediately reported for the incident. Mills went down into the Swans' rooms where he was given a concussion test and subsequently failed. The 20-year old returned to the bench later in the first quarter in a jacket, signalling that he was done for the night. Bugg played out the first quarter with a torn jumper, which was caused by Mills' angry teammates. The Swans managed to keep a close eye on the 24-year old, only keeping him to one disposal in the first quarter and six disposals in total. Melbourne co-captain Nathan Jones spoke to Channel 7 at half time, stating that Bugg's punch was a "terrible look for the game". "I think 'Buggy' would be livid with himself — he'd be very remorseful," Jones said. "It will run its course during the week obviously and will probably be well-publicised, but I'm sure Buggy is just hoping that Mills is okay. "I know Buggy really well and I'm sure there was no intent to hurt, but obviously he's struck him on the chin and unfortunately it doesn't look like Mills is going to take any further part." The incident will be assessed heavily by the MRP, and could possibly be directed straight to the Tribunal after Bachar Houli's hit on Carlton forward Jed Lamb last week. |
