![]() St Kilda coach Alan Richardson has slammed Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton over comments he made in the Herald Sun about Saints veteran Leigh Montagna. In his column, Brereton criticised Montagna for his kicking out of the defensive 50, particularly his kicking from the goal square. He also questioned the veteran's future beyond this season. The comment that angered Richardson the most was when he wrote, "There's a joke around the league that the hardest contested ball Montagna will fight for is against a teammate - to take the kick-in after a behind". Alan Richardson spoke about the comments on Fox Footy programme AFL360 on Monday night. "I thought it was incredibly disrespectful," Richardson said. "Joey's been an outstanding performer for a very long time ... when that [criticism] comes from someone like Dermott ... I thought it was really poor. "And I think Joey's been on record to say that he's OK with people having a go at his footy and challenging where he's at from a footy perspective. "Joey's been a pretty strong performer this year ... he's had a bad game. "The club had a bad game, you could pick out many players who didn't perform well, but I thought it was pretty poor form by Dermott." Montagna described the column as a "personal cheapshot", and even called Brereton to ask if he "had an issue" with him. The 33-year old is expected to speak with his management and the St Kilda Football Club at the end of this month to discuss his future beyond this season. The Saints have been a high expectation to make finals for the first time since 2011. They also find themselves competing against several teams to hold a spot in the top eight, in a tight and even season.

![]() Hawthorn senior coach Alastair Clarkson has copped a $20,000 fine, after stating that the umpiring during Hawthorn's clash against the Gold Coast Suns at the MCG was "disgraceful". In the press conference following the Hawks' 16-point loss to the Suns, Clarkson was asked about an umpiring decision that resulted in a goal for the Queensland side, answering: "I am not able to comment on disgraceful umpiring ... so I am better off not saying anything". The 49-year old has been ordered to pay $5000 out of the $20,000 to Freeze MND, while the remaining $15,000 has been suspended until the end of the 2018 season. Clarkson spoke about his comments on Fox Footy, at half time of the Carlton v GWS game last Sunday, stating that his emotions got the better of him which resulted in the comments. "It was probably a poor choice of words. I went to the press conference with the full intention of trying to educate our members and the football public of where Hawthorn is at," Clarkson said. "In no way was I trying to tarnish the umpiring of the AFL [but] I just got caught up in the emotion of the game ... I apologise to the umps and also the AFL. "I know my comments were out of whack, but I was actually trying to bow out of the conversation more so than tip into it, but if you use one word that was inappropriate, that'll cost me, I think." Football operations manager Simon Lethlean stated that Clarkson's apology had been taken into account, but still fined the four-time premiership coach due to his comments impacting the recruitment of umpires. "The AFL took into account the public apology from Alastair on Sunday afternoon, and also the fact he made direct contact with AFL umpiring director Peter Schwab to speak to him personally," Lethlean said. "Alastair relayed to me that he regretted his comments in the aftermath of his post-match press conference and was aware they had crossed the line beyond what was acceptable in how umpires are treated and spoken about. "As a senior figure in our game, and one of our leading coaches, Alastair is well aware that such remarks are extremely serious in regard to the professionalism of the umpires and our ability to continue to attract officials to our game at all levels." North Melbourne senior coach Brad Scott was fined $30,000 last year, after he accused the umpires of bias during a press conference that followed the Kangaroo's nine-point loss to Hawthorn. The football club was also fined $50,000. Former Essendon coach James Hird was also fined $20,000 during the 2004 season for labelling a specific umpire's performance as "disgraceful". ![]() Gold Coast Suns defender Jarrod Harbrow has received a second club-imposed ban after he was charged with drinking and driving last Monday. Harbrow has to enrol in the Queensland Traffic Offenders Program and has been ordered by the club to donate $5000 to a road trauma and education program. He was also issued a $5000 suspended fine by the club. The 28-year old missed the clash against Hawthorn last Saturday, where the Suns got a 16-point win at the MCG, as part of his first ban by the club. Harbrow will also miss this week's clash against Carlton. Gold Coast play Carlton on Saturday, 7:25pm at Metricon Stadium. The Match Review Panel has assessed the first six matches of round 12 and laid the following charges.
Hawthorn forward Brendan Whitecross has been charged after striking Gold Coast Suns star Gary Ablett. The incident occurred during the fourth quarter of the clash between the Hawks and the Suns, at the MCG last Saturday. The Panel assessed the incident as "intentional conduct with low impact to the body". It was classified as a $1500 sanction, but because Whitecross does not have an applicable record that impacts the penalty, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea. Giants co-captain Phil Davis has been charged after striking Carlton player Jed Lamb. The incident occurred during the first quarter of the clash between the Blues and the Giants, at Etihad Stadium last Sunday. The Panel assessed the incident as "intentional conduct with low impact to the body".
