Geelong Cats skipper Joel Selwood didn't last very long against Fremantle, after clashing heads with Dockers forward Hayden Ballantyne in the first minute of the game.
Both players ran forward towards the ball from opposite sides and collided. Selwood was lying motionless as his teammates signaled for the medical staff to attend to their injured captain. When a stretcher came onto the ground, Selwood shrugged it off and jogged off the field with the assistance of trainers. He jogged down the Geelong race where he received further medical attention and a concussion test. The 29-year old took no further part in the game. "I wasn't surprised to see him run off. It was probably a message to our medical staff and our fans, and the coaching staff as well," coach Chris Scott said post-match. "The decision was made relatively quickly. Often these things take the full 20 minutes of however long the procedure takes to work through. "I can't give you an outlook on the positive or negative side but I will say we're really confident that he'll work through a stringent process which will give us an outcome independent of the coaches, players and administration."
Selwood has a frequent history of concussions which could put him in doubt to face the Giants at Spotless Stadium on Saturday night. While Geelong haven't ruled out their skipper for the clash this weekend, it is expected that the medical staff will take extra precaution in his recovery.
It was Hayden Ballantyne's first AFL game of the season. The forward kicked two goals and had 14 possessions, but it wasn't enough to hold the Cats off, resulting in a two-point loss at Simonds Stadium.

St Kilda forward Paddy McCartin has suffered yet another concussion, after he was collected by an opponent during the first quarter of Sandringham's clash with Coburg.
McCartin was lying on the ground for 10-15 seconds before he stood up and walked off the field with trainers at the end of the first term. He spent quarter-time undergoing a concussion test, where he failed and sat out the remainder of the game. "He was ruled out for concussion, which isn't good with his history. He'll obviously get assessed during the week but hopefully for Paddy it's nothing, because he was playing very good AFL footy a couple of weeks ago," Sandringham assistant coach Brendan Allen said post-match. The 2016 season saw the 21-year old suffer three concussions, including a broken collarbone towards the end of last year. It is unknown at this stage whether the St Kilda Football Club will allow McCartin to take leave to recover. Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw is currently taking time away from the game to recover from numerous concussions sustained both in the AFL and VFL this season. Sandringham went on to lose to Coburg by 25 points. It is Coburg's first win of the season.
The AFL's version of the Twenty20 Big Bash will be launching in September this year, involving the teams that do not make finals.
During the week before finals, where the top eight teams are given a bye, the AFLX is expected to take place on the Saturday. It's a faster form of football, with shorter quarters and fewer players participating. AFL football operations manager Simon Lethlean released a statement to The Footy Show on Wednesday night, confirming the news. "We are currently investigating the opportunity of using the Saturday of the bye round to showcase AFLX via the best players from the team which have missed the finals," Mr. Lethlean said. "We are exploring this with the clubs, and have contemplated incentives to play and prize money. "We are very excited about AFLX. "It's a fast-paced, high octane version of our game and it will be a new way to view AFL." One of the concepts to be considered for the AFLX is to have each club pay a fee to enter the competition and pool the entry fees to help with funding the prize money. AFLX rules:
